Baba Tyag Mul Ji

Guru Teg Buhadur Ji’s parkash (birth) took place on April 1st, 1621 in Amritsar. His father was Guru Hargobind Saheb Ji and mother was Mata Nanaki Ji. Guru Hargobind Saheb Ji had five sons:

                                                 1) Baba Gurditta Ji

                                                2) Baba Atal Rai Ji

                                                3) Baba Ani Rai Ji

                                                4) Baba Sooraj Mul Ji

                                                5) Baba Tyag Mul Ji (Guru Teg Buhadur Ji)

At birth, Guru Teg Buhadur Ji’s originally name was Baba Tyag Mul Ji, he was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Saheb Ji. He also had one sister, Bibi Veero Ji.

Baba Tyag Mul Ji received training in the scriptures from Bhai Gurdas Ji and weapons training from Bhai Jetha. He learned how to live a Sikh way of life from Baba Budha Ji who also trained him in farm work.

From an early age, Baba Tyag Mul Ji had a saintly personality. He was very calm by nature. During his eldest brother, Baba Gurditta Ji’s wedding, Mata Nanaki dressed Baba Tyag Mul Ji in a nice new suit. He was still just a little child, about 8 or 9 years old. While walking towards the wedding ceremony, he saw a young boy standing by the side of the street. The boy was very poor and was not wearing any clothes.

When Baba Tyag Mul Ji saw the naked boy, he went up to him and asked, “Why are you not wearing any clothes?”

The boy responded, “My parents are poor. They can’t afford to buy me any clothes.”

When Baba Tyag Mul Ji heard this, he started to feel bad for the boy. He then took his own clothes off and gave them to the boy. He told the boy to wear them. The boy put on the new clothes and Baba Tyag Mul started to walk back towards his mother. When Mata Nanaki Ji saw her son walking around without any clothes on, she asked, “Son, where are your new clothes? Why are you naked?”

Baba Tyag Mul Ji responded, “Mother, I met a boy who was poor and had no clothes to wear. I could not stand to see the boy in so much pain, so I gave the boy my clothes.”

This little incident has a lot of meaning to it. That child who could not bare to see another boy naked and gave the clothes off his back, How could that child bare to see an entire religion in pain. When he grew up, the Guru gave his head to help the Hindu religion.
