Visiting Amritsar

Guru Hargobind Saheb Ji left Amritsar in 1630 and at that moment he left Harmandir Saheb (Golden Temple) under the control of some Sikhs. Guru Arjun Saheb’s brother, Prithi Chand’s grandson, Baba Har Ji eventually took control of Harmandir Saheb. He had written some of his own hymns and use to make the sangat (congregation) recite them.

The Sikhs of Amritsar had gone and complained to Guru Har Rai Ji about what was happening at Harmandir Saheb. However, Guru Har Rai Ji did not have a chance to go to Amritsar.

Guru Teg Buhadur Ji started a preaching journey where he traveled to many areas and spread the word of God. He decided to stop by at Amritsar and visit the Harmandir Saheb. He reached Harmandir Saheb on November 22, 1664.

When Baba Har Ji found out that Guru Teg Buhadur Ji was coming, he ordered the masands in the temple to lock the entrance to Harmandir Saheb.

After seeing the entrance locked, Guru Teg Buhadur Ji and his Sikhs took a bath in the Sorovar (holy pool) and then recited hymns near where the Akal Takhat is. At this moment, Makhan Shah spoke, “Guru Ji, give us permission to punish the masands who have locked the doors.”

The Guru responded, “Makhan Shah, there is no use of that. These people are already dead due to their greed. They are using the money that is offered for worship and keeping it. That is one of the worst sins, they will be punished in due time.”

Guru Teg Buhadur Ji then left Amritsar without going inside of the Harmandir Saheb.
