Parkash

Guru Ram Das Ji’s parkash (birth) took place on September 24, 1534 in the city of Lahore

His father’s name was Hardas Sodhi and the mother’s original name was Anup Devi, but after marriage she was called Mata Daya Kaur. Both of his parents were very religious. They had been married 12 years and still had no children, so that was their only wish – to have a child. Finally, after 12 years they had a son born.

At birth he was named Ram Das, but since he was the first child, he was called jetha (first child) by his friends and family members.

His family was very poor, Bhai Jetha use to sell boiled grams (chick peas) to help his family make money. Both of his parents passed away when he was only seven years old.

For this reason he started to live with his grandparents (mother’s side) in the village of Basarke. He continued to sell boiled grams in Basarke for almost another 5 years.

Guru Amardas Ji came to visit the village of Basarke and that is when Bhai Jetha Ji first met Guru Amardas Ji. Guru Amar Das Ji was very impressed with Bhai Jetha that he was so religious at such a young age. The Guru Decided to take him along to Goindwal.
