Humbleness

Guru Nanak’s eldest son, Baba Sri Chand came to meet Guru Ram Das in Amritsar. When Guru Ram Das Ji heard that Baba Sri Chand was here he ran to greet him. He thought that it is Guru Nanak’s son, he should be treated with great respect.

Unlike the gurus, Baba Sri Chand never married. He was part of the Udasi sect which also had a large following. Also, Baba Sri Chand had no hair, he shaved his head and beard. All of his followers are the same too, they also shave even uptil now.

Guru Ram Das Ji like all the Sikh Gurus kept his hair and grew his beard. Baba Sri Chand Ji saw that Guru Ram Das Ji had a very long beard. He ridiculed the Guru, “Why do you have such a long beard?”

Guru Ram Das Ji replied, “So that I can use it to wipe the dust of the feet of great men like yourself.”

Saying this, the Guru knelt down and started to dust off Baba Sri Chand Ji’s feet with his beard.

When Baba Sri Chand saw this humbleness, he pulled his feet back and said, “This humble nature of yours makes you worthy of being the guru. I do not have that humble nature which is why I was not worthy of being a guru.”
