Bhai
Bhagtu
There
was a man named Addum who had no child. He and his wife both worried
because they were getting old and they still did not have a child. They
made offerings at many places of worship, but still had no child.
One
day they met a Sikh who told them to go see Guru Ram Das Ji. So the couple
went to see Guru Ram Das Ji at Guru Ka Chak (Amritsar). They went their
and decided to stay their and do seva (service) of the sangat
(congregation).
Once
Guru Ram Das Ji went out on a journey and when he returned he brought a
lot of followers back with him. Also many more Sikhs had come to see the
Guru while he was away, so they decided to stay and see the Guru when he
came back.
There
were so many people there and it was winter time. The days were cold, the
nights were even colder. The visiting Sikhs were cold and shivering.
Bhai
Addum saw the pain the Sikhs were in and decided to help them. He brought
bundles of dry firewood to all the different camps where the Sikhs were
staying. The Sikhs used the wood to start a fire and sat around it warming
themselves.
Bhai
Addum spent all night serving the Sikhs in this way. In the morning the
Guru came and saw all of the Sikhs. He was pleased to see that all the
visitors had firewood. The Sikhs told him that Bhai Addum served us.
The
Guru called Bhai Addum to his court. He came and bowed to Guru Ram Das Ji
who said, “I am pleased with your service. Ask for anything you wish and
you will receive it.”
Bhai
Addum really wanted a son. However, because he was so old now he felt
ashamed of asking for a son. He thought that the other people in the room
might laugh at him that he wants a child at his age. So Bhai Addum did not
ask for anything.
When
Bhai Addum’s wife found out what happened, she came and asked the Guru
for a son. The Guru said he will pray for them to get a son. He also told
them to name that son Bhagtu.
After
some time they gave birth to a son who they named Bhagtu. This Bhai Bhagtu
became a devout Sikh who served the Guru’s sangat with love.
