Dara
Shikoh
The
king at the time of Guru Har Rai Ji was Shah Jahan. His eldest son, Dara
Shikoh was the next in line to be the king. This upset one of Shah
Jahan’s younger sons, Aurangzeb, who wanted to be the king.
Aurungzeb
conspired with the royal cook and had him mix tiger’s whiskers into Dara
Shikoh’s meal. This gave Dara Shikoh a very bad stomach ache. Shah Jahan
called the best doctors to cure his eldest son, but no body could cure
him.
Finally,
his minister suggested to Shah Jahan that he should go to Kiratpur where
Guru Har Rai Ji had opened a medical building. Here, the Guru hired
doctors to treat patients and he collected medicines from all areas.
People were given free treatment and medicines.
Shah Jahan asked, “How can I ask the Guru for help? I have done
so many bad things to him.”
He
said this because he had ruined the Sikhs sacred Baoli Saheb of Lahore and
had a mosque built on that site. He sent armies to attack Guru Hargobind
Saheb Ji four times. Also, his father, Jahangir was the one who ordered
the torture of Guru Arjun Saheb and had Guru Hargobind Saheb imprisoned.
At
that moment, Pir Hassan Ali, who was in the room said, “The house of
Guru Nanak does not hold grudges with anybody. They are always ready to
help others. They will help you.”
Shah
Jahan decided to send one of his men along with a letter explaing his
problem. The Guru read the letter which apologized for all of the
injustice done to the Sikhs and asked for help in curing Dara Shikoh. The
Guru gave the messenger the medicine to cure Shah Jahan’s son.
Dara
Shikoh took the medicine and was cured. After this incident Shah Jahan
made a vow that he would never be unjust to the Sikhs.
