The
fifth master, Guru Arjun Saheb and Mata Ganga Ji had been married for some
time and had still not conceived a child. One Day Mata Ganga Ji asked her
husband, the Guru, “You give many gifts to your followers. You bless
them with wealth and prosperity. Please bless me and let us have a son.”
Guru
Arjun Saheb replied, “There is no shortage of worldly gifts in Guru
Nanak’s house. To receive the gift, go serve a great Sikh and ask him
for this gift.”
The
Guru Told Mata Ganga Ji to go and serve Baba Budha Ji and ask him for a
son.
The
following day Mata Ganga Ji took a few maids with her and took food to the
fields where Baba Budha Ji was working. As she came on her chariot, Baba
Budha Ji saw them and asked, “What Trouble has fallen on them that they
were in such a rush.”
Mata
Ganga Ji went home disappointed. When Guru Arjun Saheb found out what
happened, he told her that she made a mistake by going in a chariot and
taking maids with her. He explained that when you are serving a Sikh do
not have any ego in you. You must give up your status and go as a begger,
with humbleness if you wish to ask for something.
The
following day, Mata Ganga Ji took the Guru’s advice and made Parothaes
(bread) and prepared yogurt with her own hands. She took no maids with her
and did not ride in a chariot. She walked all the way to the fields with
the food on her head.
This
time Baba Budha Ji was very happy to see Mata Ganga Ji and after eating
the meal said, “Mother! Your wish will be fulfilled. You will receive a
son who will be very great.”
He
grabbed an onion and crushed it and then said, “The same way that I have
crushed this onion, your son will crush the heads of the evil people.”
With
this blessing, Mata Ganga Ji gave birth to a son, Guru Hargobind Saheb on
June 2, 1595 in the village of Wadali.
