Miri and Piri

Guru Hargobind Saheb was only eleven years old when he became the sixth guru. When Baba Budha Ji was performing the ceremony, the Guru told him to put two swords on him – one for miri and another for piri (temporal and spiritual power).

The Guru said that the tyrants are trying to destroy religious freedom and we must stand up against them. From now on the Sikhs would be not only saints, but saint-soldiers.

The Guru said that bring horses and weapons as offerings and come register for the Guru’s army. Many people started to bring weapons for the Guru and citizens started to line up to join the Guru’s army. The Guru set up training sessions to train the people in horse riding, sword fighting, and archery.

The Guru Also introduced the singing of Ballads of martyrs by Dhadis.

In 1609, he had the Akal Takhat built across from Harmandir Saheb. He said that this would be the highest court for the Sikh religion and all orders will be passed from here. In the same year he also had a fortress built outside of Amritsar.
