Attempts
to kill the Guru
Guru
Arjun Saheb’s elder brother Prithi Chand was hoping his son Meharban
would be made the next guru. He saw the birth of Guru Hargobind Ji as a
threat to his son’s chance to be the guru. He was so upset that he did
not even go even congratulate Guru Arjun Saheb on the birth of his son.
Prithi
Chand made many attempts to kill Guru Hargobind Saheb while he was still a
baby. One time he sent a nanny to poison the Guru. The nurse put poison
around her nipples on her breasts and tried to feed it to the child. The
Guru did not drink it and by now the poison had entered her blood. She
fainted, fell back and died.
One
day he sent his male nurse to poison the child. The nurse tried to feed
the baby yogurt that was mixed with poison, the child did not eat it,
instead he started to scream very loudly.
When Mata Ganga Ji heard the screams, she came in the room. She saw
that the child did not wish to eat the yogurt so she told the nurse to
feed it to the dog. The dog died from eating the yogurt.
When
this happened, the nurse confessed that Prithi Chand sent him to kill the
boy.
Another
time Prithi Chand attempted to use one of Guru Hargobind Saheb’s child
friends, Nand Ram to poison him. He bribed Nand Ram’s uncle to help him
in his evil plan. The uncle gave Nand Ram two packs of
sweets. One pack was okay while the other had poison mixed in it.
The
uncle told Nand Ram to eat the sweets on the right side and give the ones
on the left side to Guru Hargobind Ji. The two friends started to eat the
sweets. Nand Ram did not eat the okay sweets, instead he ate the sweets
with the poison while the Guru ate the sweets that were fine.
While
eating the sweets, Nand Ram fell to the ground and died. After this, the
uncle told everyone that he was bribed by Prithi Chand.
To
escape public disgrace, Baba Prithi Chand left Wadali and moved to the
village of Haheri.
