Parkash

Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s parkash (birth) took place on December 22, 1666 at Patna Saheb in Bihar. His father was Guru Teg Buhadur Ji and mother was Mata Gujri Ji. He was named Gobind Rai by his mother.

A Muslim saint named Pir Bhikan Shah heard about the new child. He took a few of his disciples with him and came to Patna Saheb to see the Guru. Since he was coming from the village of Gharam in the district of Ambala, it took him about two months to reach Patna Saheb. He went to the house where Gobind Rai was staying and asked to see the child.

The Guru’s family told the fakir that he could not see the child. The Pir said, “I have traveled hundreds of miles in order to have a glimpse of the holy child. I will not move from this place until my wish is granted. I will not eat or drink anything until I see the child.”

He sat on the floor and went on a hunger strike. After a few days like this, he was given permission to see the holy child. The Pir saw the child and at once bowed and touched the child’s tiny feet.

The Pir brought two small pots, one was filled with water and the other with milk. He placed the pots in front of the Guru. This was a test, he wanted to see if the Guru would favor Hindus or Muslims. He thought that if the child went for the pot with milk he would be favoring Hindus and if he grabbed the one filled with water then he would help the Muslims.

The child reached forward and grabbed both pots. Pir Bhikan Shah understood that the Guru would give equal respect to both religions. After this incident, the Pir went back to his village and all throughout his life remained an admirer of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
