Childhood
Baba
Gobind Rai was about five years of age when he started to receive weapons
training. His uncle (mwmw), Kirpal Chand taught
him Gurmukhi and also started to train him in archery. He would take his
friends and divide them into two groups and have a mock war. Everyone
began to love the Guru.
He was so fond of playing with his friends that he would always
return home quite late. This would delay the reading of the Rehiras
Saheb to later in the evening. Even today, the Rehiras Saheb is
read at a later hour than most other Gurdwaras at Patna Saheb.
The landlord of Patna was Fateh Chand, people use to call him a
king, his wife was Rani Maina. They had no children and this concerned
them very much. They tried to perform many prayers and rituals so that
they might be blessed with a child, but nothing worked. One day, while the
two of them were sitting in meditation, Baba Gobind Rai came and sat in
Rani Maina's laps and then said to her, “I am your son.”
Rani Maina was very pleased to hear this, she took the Guru and
prepared a meal for him and his friends. Then the Guru started to come and
eat at the Rani’s house every day. There is a Gurdwara named Maina
Sangat Saheb built in memory of this.
In 1671, when Baba Gobind Rai was only five years old, his family
started to move to Anandpur. On the way he stopped at the village of
Danapur. In this village, there was an old lady named Mata Jamuna who was
longing to see the Guru. She prepared a meal for the Guru and at the same
time prayed that the Guru come to her home.
The Guru came himself to Mata Jamuna’s house and said,
“Grandma, bring that food you have prepared for me.”
The sangat ate the meal and then started to leave. Mata Jamuna
asked the Guru to stay longer. The Guru responded that he must go, but
told Mata Jamuna to prepare meals for the poor everyday.
There is a Gurdwara named Handi Saheb built at the site where Mata
Jamuna fed the Guru.
The Guru continued his journey and eventually made it to Anandpur.
