Longing
For the Guru
Guru
Ram Das Ji’s cousin Sihari Mall invited him to his son’s wedding in
Lahore. Guru Ram Das Ji was busy in the construction of the surovar in
amritsar, so he decided to send one of his sons.
The
Guru asked his eldest son, Baba Prithi Chand to go to the marriage. Guru
Amar Das Ji had foretold when
Guru Ram Das Ji would be leaving this world and Baba Prithi Chand knew
that time was near. He wanted to be the next Guru and thought that if he
was gone away he might miss the chance to become the next guru. So he made
an excuse and said no.
Next,
the Guru asked his second son, Mahan Dev. Baba Mahan Dev Ji had a saintly
nature and did not like to get involved in worldly customs. He also
refused.
Then
the Guru asked Guru Arjun Saheb who agreed at once to go. The Guru ordered
him to remain in Lahore until he was called for. Guru Arjun Saheb went to
Lahore and after the wedding he started to hold sangat (congregation)
every day in Lahore.
After
many months he started to long for Guru Ram Das Ji, so he wrote a letter
to the Guru. That letter was intercepted by Baba Prithi Chand who hid it.
Then the Guru wrote another letter which was also hidden by Baba Prithi
Chand.
When
no reply came back he wrote a third letter and this time said to the
messenger, “Give this letter directly to the Guru and nobody else.”
Guru
Ram Das Ji received this letter and asked his eldest son where the other
letters went. Baba Prithi Chand denied seeing the letters, but the Guru
was all-knowing. He told his Sikhs to search Baba Prithi Chand’s house
where they found the letters.
After
this, Guru Ram Das called Guru Arjun Saheb back and made him the fifth
Guru on August 28, 1581. Four days later on September 1, 1581 Guru Ram
Dass Ji left his body.
