Complaints to Akbar While
the Adi Granth Saheb was being prepared, many people came with their own
hymns and asked the Guru to add them into the Granth, The Guru had refused to
accept them. One such person was Kanha. Kanha’s
cousin Chandu was a minister for King Akbar and wanted to use him to launch a
complaint against Guru Arjun Saheb. Kanha died before he actually reached
Delhi. Many Brahmins were also unhappy with the
new Granth because it spoke the truth. It told people to break away from
meaningless rituals and to concentrate on the Almighty God. Brahmins did not
like this because it affected their livelihood – people use to pay the
Brahmins to perform these rituals. So the Brahmins used Kanha’s death as an
excuse to complain to king Akbar. They said, “Kanha was coming to see you and
to tell you that Guru Arjun has created a book in which he has insulted both
the Muslim and Hindu religions. However, Guru Arjun had him killed before he
could reach you.” King
Akbar said that he would see the Adi Granth and check it himself. Akbar
came to Punjab at the beginning of 1605 . He reached the village of Batala
where he wrote a letter to Guru Arjun Saheb telling him to come to Batala
along with his new Granth. Guru Arjun Saheb came along with many of
his Sikhs. Akabr was surprised to see how much respect was shown to the
Granth Saheb by carrying it on their heads. Then how much respect was shown
in installing it on a throne. This was amazing when you compare it to sacred
texts of other religions. King
Akbar asked to randomly hear hymns from the Adi Granth Saheb. Baba Budha Ji
randomly opened pages and read the following hymns: iqlMg mhlw 5
