Chandu’s Animosity

When Guru Arjun Saheb’s son Guru Hargobind Ji was nine years old, one of King Akbar’s ministers, Chandu tried to marry his daughter to him. He sent a group of Brahmins (Hindu priests) to meet the Guru and offer the marriage proposal.

The Sikhs found out about the marriage proposal and sent a letter to the Guru asking him to not marry his son to Chandu’s daughter. They told the Guru that Chandu was really an evil man who was corrupt.

When the Brahmins reached Guru Arjun Saheb and presented the marriage proposal, the Guru declined the offer. At the same time, Bhai Narain Dass from the village of Dalla was sitting in the congregation. He stood up and asked the Guru to marry Guru Hargobind Ji to his daughter,  Bibi Damodri. The Guru accepted the proposal and performed the engagement ceremony in front of the Brahmins.

The Brahmins returned to Delhi and told Chandu what happened. Chandu was not happy. He sent the Brahmins back to the Guru and gave them 100,000 rupees to give to the Guru. He thought that maybe the Guru would change his mind when he saw the money, but the Guru refused to take the money.

From this event, Chandu vowed to take revenge on Guru Arjun Saheb. He tried to complain to King Akbar, but the king did not listen to him. Then on October 17, 1605 king Akbar passed away and made his son Jahangir the king.

Chandu started to complain to Jahangir about Guru Arjun Saheb. He told Jahangir, “The Guru and his Sikhs are a threat to your kingdom.”

Jahangir sent Sulhi Khan along with an army to collect taxes from Punjab. When Sulhi Khan was about to leave, Chandu told him to evict Guru Arjun Saheb from Amritsar and place his elder brother Baba Prithi Chand  in his place.

Sulhi Khan went to Punjab and visited Baba Prithi Chand Ji in the village of Haheri. Baba Prithi Chand took Sulhi Khan to show him his new kiln where he made bricks. Sulhi Khan’s horse was startled for some reason and fell into the kiln that was very hot. Both Sulhi Khan and his horse were burnt to death in the fire of the kiln.

Then Chandu convinced Sulhi Khan’s nephew, Sulbi Khan that the Guru killed his uncle and that he should go take revenge on the Guru. Sulbi Khan took an army with him and started to make his way to Amritsar.  On the way he got into an argument with Hasan Ali, one of his main officers. Hasan Ali said that he and his men had not been paid for almost a year and demanded his pay.

Sulbi Khan said that he had no idea about how much money was owed and that he will not be paid until the mission is complete. This upset Hasan Ali who drew his sword and killed Sulbi Khan by severing his head.

In this way, Chandu’s wish to take revenge on Guru Arjun Saheb remained unfulfilled.
