Founding the City of Goindwal

One day, a man named Goinda came to Guru Angad Saheb and said that he was involved in a dispute with his relatives over some land and that if he won in a lawsuit, he would found a city in honor of the Guru.

He won the lawsuit, so he started to promote his city but people were not coming to live in his newcity. Goinda came to Guru Angad Saheb and prayed to him to build the city.

Guru Angad Saheb sent Baba Amar Das Ji to help him. The city's work proceeded without any further delay and Baba Amar Das named the city Goindwal.

When the work was successfully completed, Goinda went to Guru Angad to thank him and to beg him to come and live in the newly founded city. The Guru did not wish to leave his town, so he asked Baba Amar Das Ji to go and live in Goindwal. Baba Amar Das obeyed the command of the Guru but asked him to let him continue with his duty of bringing water from the Beas river for the Guru's morning bath. The Guru granted this wish.

Baba Amar Das Ji started to stay in Goindwal. His daily routine was to rise very early in the morning, take a pitcher of water from the Beas river and proceed to Khadoor which was about three miles away. On the way he would recite Japji. There was a mid-way spot which was called Damdama or breathing place where he wuold rest for a while. A temple was erected on this spot later on.

After attending the morning service, and listening to the singing of Asa Ki Var, he would fetch water for the Guru's kitchen, clean dishes and bring firewood from the forest. During the day he would learn Gurbani (scriptures). After the evening congregation, he would  walk back to Goindwal.
