This month let us take a look at this
Shabad (hymn) and see what Satguru Ji is telling us. Guru Ji
starts off by saying:
ijs kw qnu mnu Dnu sBu iqs kw soeI suGVu sujwnI ]
Translation:
He who created this body, mind, and wealth, it all belongs
to him. He alone is all-knowing.
Just
like if we make a house we can claim that it belongs to us or
if we make a painting we say that it is mine. Guru Ji is
saying that this mind, body, and wealth (every thing we see
around us) belongs to the one who created it also. Who
created these things?
God is the one who created everything
and these all belong to him. Then Guru Ji says that God is
all-knowing. What does this mean?
If we buy something from the store and something goes
wrong with it what do we do?
Usually we take it back to the
store who sends it to the manufacturer. The
manufacturer is the one who made the part so they know
how to fix it. They know how all of the wiring works and can
quickly tell if something is wrong with the part. That is
what Guru Ji is saying, God is the one who created everything
we see including our mind and body. So if something is wrong
with your body he knows why. If you feel some kind of pain in
your body then God knows why you are getting this pain. Also
if your mind is stressed out then God also knows what the
reason for your stress is because he is the one who created
you.

]1]
Translation:
Only he listens to my pains and
happinesses and then cures them.
God is the only one who listens to all
of our pains and then tells us how to cure ourselves. See
when we go to a worldly friend and tell them our pains they
may listen for 10 or 15 minutes, but then they will start to
tell all of their own pains because:
nwnk duKIAw sBu sMswru]
Translation:
O Nanak, the whole world is
suffering.
Only
that person who himself is worry-free and has no pains can
help you. In this world there is only one person like that:
jo jo dIsY so so rogI] rog rihq myrw siqguru jogI]
Translation:
Whoever I see is in pain. The only one
who is pain free is my true Guru.
Just like
some times we go through a major problem in our life and we
are too scared to tell anyone because we do not know if they
will laugh at us or think we are weird. However, we know that
we can tell our parents because they genuinely care about us
and will try their hardest to help us. That is how the Guru
is for us. We may not be able to tell others our problem
because we might be scared or feel ashamed, but we can tell
the Guru anything because he is our mother and father:
gurdyv mwqw gurdyv ipqw
Translation:
The Guru is our mother, the Guru is our
father.
Guru
Ji continues in the shabad:
jIA kI eykY hI pih mwnI ]
Translation:
There is only one God who can satisfy
this soul.
Avir jqn kir rhy bhuqyry iqn iqlu nhI kImiq jwnI
] rhwau ]
Translation:
They try other things besides God's
name, but all of those things have no value.
Guru Ji is saying that even though God
is the only one who can satisfy this soul, people try other
things to satisfy their souls. They try other things to find
happiness.
For example, some people think
that if they have lots of money then they will be happy, but
that is not true. I have seen many people who were very rich
yet they still had a lot of stress on their minds. With
wealth you may be able to buy a nice bed, but you cannot buy
a night of stress-free sleep. This wealth will not go with
you, even those kings who had millions of dollars left this
world empty handed:
nWgy pwvhu qy gey ijn ky lwK kroir]
Translation:
Those will millions of dollars left this
world bare-footed.
Others think that if they have lots of
friends and relatives around them then they will stay happy.
But Gurbani says that is not true:
kbIr sUku n eyNh juig krih ju bhuqY mIq]
Translation:
Kabir, happiness does not come in this
world by having many friends.
However,
These friends are only there when you have good times. As
soon as tough times come to you they all leave your side:
suK mY bhu sMgI Bey duK mY sMig n koie]
Translation:
In good times there are a lot of
companions around, but in bad times there is no one.
Some
try to find happiness by going to other people (saints, human
gurus), but why would you go to the middle man when you can
go directly to the head manager (God).
Then in the next line Guru Ji says:
AMimRq nwmu inrmolku hIrw guir dIno mMqwnI ]
Translation:
The Guru has given me the rare jewel of
God's nectar-like Name.
Just like when you go to the doctor he
checks you out and then gives you medicine. The same way the
Guru listens to your pains and then gives you the medicine of
God's Name. However, this medicine is very rare. It can only
be received through the true Guru:
nwnk ibnu siqgur nwau n pweIAY jy sau locY koeI]
Translation:
O Nanak, without the true Guru, the Name
cannot be found. Even if one was to search hundreds of times.
ifgY n folY idRVu kir rihE pUrn hoie iqRpqwnI ]2]
Translation:
it cannot fall or be shaken off, it
stays strong and brings fulfillment.
Guru
Ji is saying that the Name of God is very strong. It can not
be shaken or become lost. The person who meditates on this
name should be the same way. When you take this medicine you
too will become strong and nothing will be able to shake you
off your path. Then you can sit on a hot plate, in a pot of
boiling hot water, be bricked alive, or have your children
cut into pieces, but you will still not shake from your path.
Once you receive this Name of God then you will become
totally content from the inside. You will be happy with
everything you have and will not want anything else.
Eie ju bIc hm qum kCu hoqy iqn kI bwq iblwnI ]
Translation:
That which was seperating me from you
has been removed.
Before there was a little wall
between the individual and the Guru which did not let him
fully understand the Guru. Now through meditation of God's
Name, that wall has been removed and he can clearly see his
beloved Guru/God.
Alµkwr imil QYlI hoeI hY qw qy kink vKwnI ]3]
Translation:
When gold is melted into liquid form, it
is still called gold.
Guru Ji explains that if we take 2
pieces of gold and melt them down into liquid form and put
them both into one plate, then we would not be able to
distinguish which part of the liquid came from which piece of
gold. They mix together and become one.
That is the same situation from meditating on God's
Name. You become one with God and no one will be able to tell
the difference between you and God.

Translation:
The Divine Light is now visible inside
and true happiness has been found. The celestial music of God
begins to be heard.
Satguru Ji tells us that once you truly
meditate you see the light of God inside of you and find true
inner-peace. You also begin to hear the music of God's Land
inside of you.
Then in the final line of this hymn Guru ji says:
khu nwnk inhcl Gru bwiDE guir kIE bMDwnI ]4]
Translation:
Says Nanak, I have built my eternal
home. The Guru has built it for me.
Satguru Ji
says that through Simran (meditation) of God's Name one can
find his true eternal home inside of himself/herself. See
where do we feel the most safest?
The answer is home. No matter where you go you feel
the safest when you go home. That is where most people feel
happy. When they have spent all day outside at work or school
in this busy world they come home and feel peaceful. The same
is this home inside of us. We are all tired and stressed out
from this busy world, but when we find this eternal home
inside of us we can forget about all of these pains of the
world.
The reason is because this eternal home has no pain
and there is no day or night there. However, man is foolish
and tries to look for this peace outside when this house of
peace was inside of him all of the time. It can only be found
through the grace of the Guru when we stop looking for it
from the outside and start to look inside of ourselves.
